This week: the Scrubba Bag
This week, we want to introduce you to the Scrubba Wash Bag. Imagine you are already packed and ready to go in an adventure! Volunteering abroad is a great opportunity to give to others, to the environment and to communities in need; so we want you to give your very best! That’s why we have managed to discover some of the world’s greatest Travel Gadgets, and we want to recommend those we think you could really use.
What would you do, if you didn’t have a washing board or washing machine available during your trip, and the dirt its starting to pile up -as well as the smells!? We think the Scrubba Wash Bag is a great aid in this kind of scenario, and we want to tell you all about it.
What’s the Srubba Wash Bag?
It is a portable bag, that works under the same principles as a washing board. Clothes get cleaned, by rubbing them against the washboard. The Scrubba Wash Bag is made of durable materials, it is light weight and it won’t let water out, while you are washing your clothes. When laid flat, the bag measures approx. 54 cm x 32 cm.
Why do we think the Scrubba Wash Bag is great for your volunteer trip?
You will be probably travelling to a remote part of the Kenyan Desert, or you’ll be teaching children in the mighty mountains of Vietnam. Whichever the case, while you are doing volunteer work, you’ll probably see what scarcity and social inequalities looks like. Or maybe, you’ll be volunteering with a conservationist organisation and gain more awareness about the resources you have and the way we sometimes we waste them, during your volunteer work.
I assume you would want to be resourceful, but you might also want to do travelling or some work of the sorts and still be able to do basic cleaning. That’s why we think you would love the Scrubba Wash Bag!
The Scrubba Wash Bag is basically the flexible internal washboard that provides a machine quality wash in just minutes. But, with the massive advantage that it uses a lot less water; it is lightweight and easy to transport. It cleans your clothes without need of electricity and it is made of a material that won’t easily rip.
We actually used the Scrubba Wash Bag ourselves and, although we felt sceptical at first, I must say: it really didn’t disappoint!
I must say, I didn’t think, this is a gadget I would need, because I thought washing clothes won’t be a challenge while I was abroad, but it had proven to be actually pretty helpful! Imagine you have been travelling for a while now, under the raging Ugandan sun. As a frequent volunteer myself, I know some of volunteering jobs demand a lot of physical activity; needless to say, you’ll sweat a lot, and your clothes will get dirty… And you can ignore the smells for a while, but eventually you would probably want to do some laundry. :s
The Scrubba Wash Bag advantages:
- The Srubba Wash Bag can wash up to 2 days worth of summer clothes.
- It uses around 2-3L of water, when filled to half of its capacity
- This bag is very easy to use! Seriously, I am not a gadget expert, so this kind of product is perfect for people who won’t bother to read an instructions manual.
- When conveniently rolled and clipped, as indicated in their website, it will occupy as much room as a regular T-Shirt.
- The Scrubba Wash Bag is not really heavy!
- It easily fits in carry-on and luggage and it is easy to transport.
- It has a valve that will easily let dirty water out, without making a huge mess.
- And the best part: it can be used several times, and will last long, if you take proper care of it.
Why couldn’t the Scrubba Bag Wash not work for you?
- If you think you are wasting too much water by using it. Or you don’t have clear access to sanitary water.
- Maybe you don’t want to carry the Scrubba Wash Bag around with you.
- It can also happen that your organization facilitates access to a washing machine or washing board.
- If you hate any sort of manual labour -or any physical labour at all-, you’ll probably won’t like the experience of washing clothes with the Scrubba Wash Bag.
- Or, maybe you don’t believe in washing clothes! Which, you know, it’s ok. You do you! 😉
My personal opinion
I found the Scrubba Wash Bag to be extremely helpful during my trip. As long as you aren’t washing too much clothing, this can be a pretty practical product to carry around. It gives you a lot of flexibility, and it is a real money-saver, if used wisely. It can get some practice to effectively take all the air out of the bag, before you wash any clothes, but once you’ll get there, it is a pretty simple gadget to use. I will recommend this for backpackers and volunteers who won’t be having a washing board, or washing machine available during their stay.
This is how you use it:
- Fill it: you add water, cleaning product and the clothes you want to wash.
- Roll & Clip the Scrubba Wash Bag. You need to take all the excess air from the bag.
- Deflate the Bag: By opening the cap and squeeze the valve to expel air from the Srubba Wash Bag.
- Rub your clothes against the Srubba Wash Bag’s internal flexible washboard. You can do this for about 30 seconds to 3 minutes.
- Rinse: Simply unclip and unroll the Srubba Wash Bag’s seal. Remove dirty water, and rinse clothes with fresh water.
