The low global literacy rates have detrimental effects on communities all over the world. Many people take literacy for granted, but this is not the case for everyone: 98% of illiterate people are concentrated in three key areas: South and West Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Arab States. This does not mean that development nations aren’t facing illiteracy problems. Approximately 93 million people have basic or below basic literacy skills, in the US alone! For Africa, the literacy rate is only 60% for the whole contintent. Needless to say: something needs to change SOON!
The difficulties to access to education could be due to different political, socio-economical or environmental factors. And help in this area is desperately needed! Volunteer in education and support the work of teams on the ground. With your help, we can help to increase the self-sufficiency within communities by assisting in a wide range of teaching activities. Most programs want to ensure passing on knowledge that will give people their best chance in life, to give them skills to earn a better income and to ultimately become self-sufficient.

Fields of interest for a volunteer in education
Adults
When you are struggling to survive on a daily basis, education might not be a priority for you. In most cases, people won’t even have money to cover their daily expenses, much less consider to give away money to learn. That is the reason why some social programs are meant for volunteers to provide the educational resources that will help working adults to find better jobs and a better chance in life.
Either by helping them finish their basic education, teaching them new skills, or giving them the opportunity to learn English, you will make a change in a person’s life. It is important to know that being a volunteer in education for adults require a set of skills and experience that most people do not possess! If you have any experience in education (especially in education for adults), your efforts can help to make a difference.
Children & Youth
You do not choose where you were born, and a lot of children face poverty and lack opportunities are part of it all. If you are interested in working with children, and have the capacity and the training to do so, please volunteer in education for children.
You will support the learning progress of children in kindergarten, primary- or middle school by assisting teachers or by planning your own classes. Some schools don’t even have enough equipment that propitiate good learning, and a lot of countries lack of capacitated -and capable- teachers to take up to this enormous task. So, as a volunteer in education, you will be taking in an enormous task, but a task that will have immediate results. Education keeps children from joining gangs, it better their chances in life, and gives them an opportunity to help their families.
Conflict Prevention
Would you like to participate in a project that fights inequality and aspires for peace? Your work as a volunteer in education is the perfect way to achieve these goals. Join a social project whose priority is to raise public awareness about conflict prevention, rape, child-based violence, ethnic conflicts and bullying. Promote peace and work with these communities through fundraising, facilitating peace education workshops or improving the capacity of traditional councils in conflict resolution. These tasks require enormous compromise –we cannot stress this enough!-, and a certain amount of knowledge. So, amongst other things it is expected of you to have the availability to work on these projects, and to speak English at an intermediate level; in some cases, French at a basic level is required.
IT Training
The world is moving fast and people need to adapt to what companie are expecting of them. Today it is crucial to know how to use a computer, and a lot of people in the underdeveloped world are falling behind and loosing work opportunities, because they lack this knowledge. It is crucial to create opportunities for underprivileged societies to learn about technological development.
By becoming a volunteer in education, you can change a person’s life and its whole job perspectives, by imparting IT-Courses. For this, you must have at least basic computer skills (proof of this is that you are reading this, right know, on your computer). So, don’t be afraid to share your knowledge: teach adults and children how to use a computer and help them improve their future.
Languages

Special Needs
Some children with disabilities have the misfortune of not having enough money to take care of themselves, and they need a great deal of help! Luckily, there are projects that are willing to take this challenge and provide adequate attention to every single person in need. Volunteers are very welcome to support social projects in their daily tasks! If you are a caring, open person who isn’t afraid to get in close contact to foreign people, and you also have experience working with children with special needs, then this kind of volunteer program is ideal for you.
A lot of help is needed in these social organisations every day. You will expect to get a wide range of different duties. Volunteer in a day-care centre and design activities that foster physical development or get involved in school lessons and assist teachers in speech therapy lessons. Without question, this experience will be something you will never forget and, hopefully, the children you help won’t either.
Business Training
Help communities in disadvantage to better their situation and volunteer in education with focus on business training. Use your knowledge to organise communities, and aid them to build their own businesses. You might coach them on a series of different topics going from accounting to community leadership. As different cultures handle things differently, you will probably need to be creative and might need to optimise processes yourself.
